How to Find Chords in a Song
Most songs repeat a small set of chords. The trick is to find the key, listen to the bass, and identify whether each chord sounds major, minor, or dominant.
1. Find the bass notes
The bass often names the root of the chord. If the bass moves from A to D to E, try A, D, and E chords first.
2. Decide major or minor
Major chords usually sound open and bright. Minor chords usually sound darker or more tense. If the root is A, compare A major and A minor against the recording.
3. Look for the loop
Verses and choruses usually repeat a chord loop. Once you identify four bars correctly, you often have the core of the section.
